Toll the new year's bell, inside the prohibited area

Toll the new year's bell, inside the prohibited area 2013-2014

Every new year's eve in Japan, people go to their local temples to ring the bell to exorcise all the negatives that had happened that year. Exactly when it turns to the new year's day, the sound of the bell echoes all around in Japan. However, probably the only place in Japan you cannot hear the bell gong is the area surrounding the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. In fact, since 2011, no new year's bell has rung in this place because nobody do not live in this erea. On new year's eve of 2013, we entered the area, sure enough, to toll the bell.

The Earthquake in Tohoku in 2011 caused Tsunami that washed off everything on the shore. The fisherman's town and the port were torn down and made into multiple sandy beach. We scooped up the newly made beach with a metal detector to find those things left behind. We dug up the sand and found some accessories and house wreckages. We planted myosotis on the site we found those remains. The floral language of myosotis is " Forget-me-not".

「 」

" " 2014

In Japan, there is a forest called "Jukai" where hundreds of people commit suicide each year. In that forest, I came across a decayed body. Next to the body was a half-drunk carton of sake. The carton of sake was left behind, but their voices were not. Wanting to hear their voices, I made a postcard without an address from that carton.

Connected to something

At the foot of Japan’s symbol, Mt. Fuji, lays a vast forest called Jukai (Sea of Trees).

It's rumored that once you enter the forest you lose a sense of direction and can't fin d a way out. The forest is also well-known suicide spot. Those who are lost deep inside, set off for the final destination—death.

Wandering among thick trees many of them ask themselves whether they should go on or return. There are many ropes on the ground left by those who had thought of turning back.

We followed those ropes leading somewhere deep in the forest in hope they'd guide us to someone as in "hide-and-seek."

Hide-and-seek is a common children's game in Japan. One calls out "Are you ready?"
while others are hiding. They answer "I’m ready" if they are, or "Not yet" if not.

People waver between life and death in the forest, as if in "hide-and-seek." Calling out "Are you ready," we headed towards the heart of the forest. Deep in the forest we'd wait for an answer.

Rhythm of Survive

Rhythm of Survive 2015

While ago, I went to Jukai (The Sea of Trees by Mt Fuji) and found a person who hanged himself.I freaked out and screamed, "I'm so sorry" again and again.
I also said, "It's not your fault. It must be the outer world that has done something bad."
I'm not sure if what I said was right. But one thing for sure is that we still thrive in the outer world.

Later on, I brought the rope back in town and played rope-jumping with people. Some coudn't jump at all. Some avoided to jump. The other one was good at jumping, but at some point he suddenly stopped.
This is the survival rhythm for everyone.

The sun in a palm

The sun in a palm (2015)

In 1991, the mural made by Taro has been demolished with the Old Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building where the mural was placed. The mural was embedded with the building, so it was impossible to save the mural by moving it. The sun that does not withdraw, looks like Taro himself. Although because of that, the sun was destroyed. In Toshiko's diary, it says right before the 'Wall of the Sun' was destroyed, Taro stroke the wall. That was an event happened five years ago before Taro died.

Today, we will evoke the appearance of the 'Wall of the Sun' on the day that was demolished. The sun that was broken by the power that cannot resist, is no longer the dead. Those shards can be our arms to resist.
We all, right now, need those kinds of arms.

The sun in the shadow

The sun in the shadow  2015
Movie

Everybody knows 'Tower of the Sun'.
This tower is named after the "sun", but in fact the sun is drawn in the back of the tower. The 'Black Sun' on the back is so weird that it is not hard to imagine a powerful image on the front. Moreover its back faces north, and therefore this 'Black Sun' doesn't get the sun throughout the day. The 'Tower of the Sun' that put the 'Black Sun' on its back looks as if it were a human being that shoulders the despair. We and also Taro may have to shoulder this 'Black Sun'

The 'Sun of the Underworld' is missing because of the confusion of the demolition of the exhibit.
"Missing Sun" – is a strange phrase. Is there case that the sun goes somewhere? I asked the blind people who doesn't receive the light of the sun. "Do you recognize where is the sun?" They found the sun without any difficulty, just then the sun was reflected in their eyes.

Flowerbed was placed at the entrance of exhibition. It's width was as wide as the corridor.
During the a-month-long exhibition, 10,000 visitors stepped on the flowerbed.

In the beginning, people hesitated to step on flowers, but after the first person stepped on,they continued one after another. It gradually became a trail, then a waste. At the end of the flowerbed you'll see a notice saying,

"It feels like we are always stepping on something like a flower."
