KYUN-CHOME
KYUN-CHOME is an artist unit formed by Eri Homma and Nabuchi, based in Japan and Southeast Asia. The duo was formed, triggered by the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan. Viewing the origins of art as rooted in "love and prayer," they intersect socio-political issues with poetic imagination to seek new forms of love and prayer for the contemporary world.
Their practice is characterized by engaging with tense societal issues through nimble, humorous, and embodied actions. Working through a wide range of approaches, they continue their practice across various mediums—such as video, photography, and embroidery—as well as actions like diving into the sea.
Through poetic actions, KYUN-CHOME weaves poetry together with pressing social issues—such as nuclear history, environmental destruction, and gender—generating new manifestations of prayer. in Like Howling to the Farther World (2013), they howled like a wolf in a town abandoned due to radioactive contamination; in Cross the Sea with Goldfish (2022), connecting the situation of women with that of goldfish bred to be artificially beautiful, they escape together into the open sea; in Prayers Dissolved in the Sea (2023), they submerged into the seabed while reciting prayers; and in Ambiguous Earth with Bouquets (2025), they crafted a globe-shaped vase derived from ambiguous world maps drawn by people from various countries, filling it with flowers. Through these ongoing gestures, KYUN-CHOME explores well-being and love for the self, the other, and all living beings.
An Essay on KYUN-CHOME
Text:Chikako Shakudo/Blue is the Colour of the Soul—— to immerse myself in the Earth
